Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that guides patients to briefly focus on traumatic or difficult memories while experiencing bilateral stimulation, typically through eye movements. This process is linked to a decrease in the vividness and emotional intensity of trauma-related and/or difficult memories.
EMDR therapy is a well-researched and an effective method for helping individuals recover from trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Ongoing studies indicate that EMDR is beneficial for treating anxiety, depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019). (EMDR International Association. (n.d.).

How is EMDR Different
EMDR therapy does not require talking about the distressing issue in detail or doing homework between sessions. Instead of focusing on changing emotions, thoughts, or behaviours, it allows the brain to heal naturally.
This therapy addresses unprocessed traumatic or distressing memories and often needs fewer sessions than other forms of psychotherapy (EMDR International Association. (n.d.).
